STATEHOUSE – State Representative Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) honored the 2014 state champion Wapahani High School boys’ baseball team with a resolution at the Statehouse.
“It is great to see students working hard not only in the classroom, but in their extracurricular activities as well,” said Rep. Beumer. “Winning a state championship is no small feat and requires a great deal of commitment, drive and dedication.”
Rep. Beumer was joined in the House Chamber by the baseball team, head coach Brian Dudley, assistant coach Jason Dudley and Superintendent Bryan Rausch.
The Wapahani Raiders defeated Evansville Mater Dei 2-0, marking their 17th straight win. The team gained the school’s first Class 2A state championship after a 30-4 season record. This was also the first baseball state title for any Delaware County team.
The Raiders were led by Zack Thompson, a left-handed pitcher, who pitched a complete shutout in the championship game. Senior right fielder Collin Hoots received the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award in 2A baseball. The award honors athletes, nominated by their principal and coach, who excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.
“Winning is about more than just trophies or medals,” said Rep. Beumer. “It represents something much bigger than each individual player and each individual coach and illustrates the team’s collective pride in the community they represent. I want to congratulate these young men and their coaches on their accomplishments and wish them the best as they continue to pursue excellence both on and off the field.”
