STATEHOUSE (March 21, 2025) – State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond) sponsored a Senate bill aimed at ensuring Indiana's nursing workforce continues to meet the growing health care needs of Hoosiers.
With Indiana projected to have a shortage of nearly 10,000 licensed practical nurses by 2037, Senate Bill 176 would allow high school students to enroll in state-accredited nursing programs. Barrett said this step could help students save money on college-level courses that would count toward a future degree, get experience in a professional environment sooner and create more opportunities for higher educational attainment, such as training to be a registered nurse.
"I'm proud to sponsor this bill, which will help address the nursing shortage by creating an easier process for individuals to pursue a nursing career," Barrett said. "By improving access to LPN licensure and making the process more effective, we are investing in the future of Indiana's health care."
Several Ivy Tech campuses offer nursing programs to earn an associate of science in nursing degree or enroll in a transition to ASN program. Others have a practical nursing technical certificate program. Visit IvyTech.edu for more information.
Barrett said the bill would also add two new members to the State Board of Nursing, broadening the representation and ensuring the board is equipped to address evolving challenges in nursing.
Senate Bill 176 passed the Senate and House with bipartisan support and now heads to the governor's desk for consideration. To learn more and watch session and committee meetings, visit iga.in.gov.
