STATEHOUSE (April 17, 2025) – State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond) sponsored a Senate bill aimed at improving the oversight and administration of the Medicaid program in Indiana. The bill includes several provisions designed to increase transparency and prevent fraud to ensure the program's long-term sustainability.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, Medicaid enrollment in Indiana has significantly increased, with nearly 2 million Hoosiers currently relying on the program for their health coverage. In response to this rapid growth, Barrett sponsored Senate Bill 2 to ensure Indiana's Medicaid system remains sustainable and accountable.
Under Senate Bill 2, Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) would report fraudulent claims and improper payments annually to the Medicaid Oversight Committee, as well as any state and federal funds that were recovered. The FSSA would also regularly crosscheck Medicaid recipient data with various state and federal agencies to ensure accuracy and further prevent fraud.
“As the chair of the House Public Health Committee, I know how critical it is to ensure our Medicaid program is administered in a way that is both transparent and cost-effective," Barrett said. "This bill will strengthen oversight and accountability, while improving the overall efficiency of the program to ensure that support is available to Hoosiers who need it most."
The bill would also allow FSSA to reimburse medical providers at the correct Medicaid fee schedule rate for certified medical claims made before the start of benefits, as long as certain conditions are met. This change is aimed at improving the efficiency of the reimbursement process.
Senate Bill 2 passed the House and Senate and now heads to the governor for consideration as a new law. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
