STATEHOUSE (Aug. 29, 2025) – Gov. Mike Braun recently ceremonially signed into law legislation co-authored by State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) to address flooding issues and protect Hoosiers living in the Maumee River Basin.
The Maumee River Basin consists of three major rivers: the Maumee River, the St. Joseph River and the St. Mary's River. Its drainage area in Indiana covers over 1,000 square miles in six northeast counties, which can cause damaging floods in surrounding areas. House Enrolled Act 1126 expands the flexibility of the Maumee River Basin Commission to continue to promote flood mitigation, soil and water conservation, and related resource management.
"Watersheds are a great tool to address damaging floodplains and protect Indiana's natural landscape," Aylesworth said. "By expanding the Maumee River Basin Commission and broadening their authority, they can better protect Hoosiers living there from devastating flood damage."
Aylesworth said the new law will add members to the commission to better represent counties within the basin, give members more authority to undertake flood damage reduction efforts and sets up an annual budget formula to ensure they're appropriately allocating funding to best serve Hoosiers living there.
