STATEHOUSE (Jan. 7, 2026) – State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) authored a House Concurrent Resolution to rename a portion of U.S. Route 41 in honor of fallen Newton County Sheriff Cpl. Brandon Schreiber.
Schreiber, a Crown Point native, joined the Newton County Sheriff's Department full time in 2019 after serving as a deputy for three years. On Sept. 1, 2024, he was wounded in pursuit of an armed suspect fleeing over the Illinois border and later succumbed to his injuries after 10 days at the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, Ill. Because Schreiber was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, Aylesworth's resolution would rename the U.S. 41 bridge over the Kankakee River the "Corporal Brandon Schreiber Memorial Bridge."
"After giving his life to selflessly protect and serve our community, we can now honor Cpl. Schrieber in a way that exemplifies his passion and love for nature," Aylesworth said. "My heart goes out to his young family and hope this bridge renaming serves as a testament to his life, service and legacy."
Before he joined the Newton County Sheriff's Department in 2019, Schreiber served as a deputy marshal with the Morocco Town Marshal's Office and as a volunteer firefighter with the Kentland-Jefferson Township Fire Department.
