Throughout the summer months, legislators spend a lot of time in their districts meeting with folks about what they would like to see accomplished during the upcoming legislative session. The interim period also presents lawmakers opportunities to closely examine and review some of the most pressing issues facing Indiana, by serving on summer study committees.
The Legislative Council, which is made up of 16 Indiana House and Senate members, recently assigned more than 40 topics to be studied by summer committees. Policymakers will move forward on these key issues and work to recommend legislation for next session.
An important issue lawmakers will be focusing on is safety in our schools. Due to a few isolated incidents, action needs to be taken in order to improve the reporting requirements of sexual misconduct in our schools. Like any serious problem, to fix it we must have a clear picture of the extent of the problem and where there might be especially troubled areas. This will lay the foundation for introducing effective legislation aimed at keeping Hoosier students safe.
The Funding Indiana's Roads For a Stronger, Safer Tomorrow Task Force will take a deep dive into how to best fund our infrastructure needs. It is my hope that a long-term plan can be developed and implemented to cement Indiana’s reputation as the Crossroads of America.
In the coming weeks, members of the Indiana General Assembly will be assigned to these study committees. I look forward to receiving my assignments and working with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in order to develop solutions that will have lasting positive effects on District 74 and the state.
In order to keep Hoosiers informed about the work summer committees are doing, meetings are streamed live online at iga.in.gov. Committee schedules and agendas are also available at this site. Citizens are always welcome to attend hearings at the Statehouse.
