[r93] Rep. Frizzell encouraging students to partake in essay competition (10/18/2011)

STATEHOUSE— State Representative David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) is encouraging local fourth graders to participate in an essay competition in conjunction with “Indiana Statehood Day,” a celebration of Indiana’s 195th birthday.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office is sponsoring the competition. Winners will be honored at the Statehood Day Celebration taking place on Friday, December 9, 2011 from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. EST, at the Indiana Statehouse. All essays must be received or postmarked October 28, 2011.

“This is a great opportunity for our local fourth graders to learn about their state history,” said Rep. Frizzell. “This is a chance for students to express what being a Hoosier means to them and to convey what they have been learning in the classroom.”

The competition rules are as follows:

• The competition is open to any Indiana fourth grade public, private or home school student.
 
• Essays need to range from 100 to 400 words, handwritten or typed.

• Essays must include student’s name, teacher’s name, and the school’s name, address and   telephone number. Please make sure the school name is on every essay.
 
• Essays should convey: What living in the State of Indiana means to the student—what are the things that make the student glad that he or she is a Hoosier?

A group of selected judges will read through all entries and then choose first, second and third place winners. The first place winner will be invited to read his or her essay at the December 9 ceremony.

“I hope that all fourth graders take advantage of this contest,” said Rep. Frizzell. “It will be a unique educational experience and further their understanding of our state.”
