STATEHOUSE—State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) was honored with the 2012 Early Care and Education Award by the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children, Inc.(IAEYC).
“It is an honor to receive this award on the heels of passing legislation that fulfilled one of our longtime goals of making full-day kindergarten a reality across the state,” said Rep. Behning. “Early childhood education is vital to student learning and this legislation will further our quest of ensuring each child is equipped with a high quality education.”
Lisa Cordle, a full-day kindergarten teacher in Wayne Township and Indiana IAEYC member, nominated Rep. Behning for this distinguished award. Supported by over 2,000 members statewide, IAYEC’s mission is to promote and support quality care and education for all young children by offering professional development for early childcare educators, assisting in the improvement of program quality and championing public policy relevant to early education.
“This award is presented to an individual whose efforts have improved the quality of life for children by promoting legislation that supports children, or whose efforts have improved the communication between the political and early childhood sectors for addressing issues related to health, education, and welfare. IAEYC members nominated Representative Robert Behning (District 91) for his support of bills that promote the education and safety of young children and family tax credits,” stated Dianna Wallace, Executive Director for IAEYC.
Rep. Behning received the award, during IAEYC’s 2012 Indiana Early Childhood Celebration luncheon. Over 200 early childhood facilities, Head Start programs and schools were honored during this Early Childhood Celebration. The luncheon was part of the Association’s annual Early Childhood Conference where over 3,000 educators from around the state participated.
“Bringing full-day kindergarten to Indiana was not easy, but was worth the fight. Full-day kindergarten exposes students early on to educational experiences that will enable them to perform better in school in later years,” said Rep. Behning. “I thank IAEYC for this award and for all their efforts to educate our youngest Hoosiers.”
During the luncheon, Rep. Behning was thanked for his commitment and dedication to young children and their families.
