Rep. Behning: HEA 1338 creates stronger choices for studentsSTATEHOUSE – Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) joined Governor Mike Pence today as he signed House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1338, legislation that will increase the accountability and standards of Indiana Charter Schools.
“This legislation was another step forward for Indiana’s charter schools to make sure that we are holding them to the highest standard. The General Assembly has worked diligently over the past few years to develop Indiana into a national leader for student opportunities. Today’s legislation will help ensure that those opportunities are as great as they can be,” said Rep. Behning.
HEA 1338 increases accountability and standards in charter schools, as well as enhancing transparency in the student’s performances. The legislation addresses various issues regarding charter school administration, including making charter schools eligible to receive School Safety Grants. HEA 1338 also addresses other rules, procedures and protocols pertaining to Indiana’s charter schools so that they are performing optimally.
Rep. Behning worked with Indiana’s charter schools to craft this legislation in an effort to help clean up and clarify multiple aspects of the charter school law and to codify existing practices. Through this legislation Rep. Behning was able to increase accountability for schools and authorizers to ensure that charter schools will not be allowed to stay open if they are consistently deemed as a failing school.
“Indiana children’s education will continue to be my top priority at the Statehouse,” said Rep. Behning. “Through legislation like HEA 1338, we are creating stronger options to choose from when it comes to where Hoosier students wish to learn and grow.”
Rep. Behning (R-Indianapolis) represents portions of Marion and Hendricks counties. Rep. Behning is the Chairman of the Education Committee, and also serves on the Public Health and Utilities and Energy committees.
