Rep. Behning: Celebrating Indiana's 195th Birthday

STATEHOUSE-State Representative Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis), Chairman of the House Education Committee, is encouraging local fourth graders to participate in an essay competition in conjunction with "Indiana Statehood Day," a celebration of Indiana's 195th birthday.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office is sponsoring the competition.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our fourth graders to express why they are proud to live in Indiana," said Rep. Behning. "I highly encourage all fourth grade students to partake in this essay competition."

The theme is "What Indiana means to me" and the competition rules are:

. The competition is open to any Indiana fourth grade public, private or home school student.
. Essays need to range from 100 to 400 words, handwritten or typed.
. Essays must include student's name, teacher's name, and the school's name, address and
telephone number. Please make sure the school name is on every essay.
. Essays should convey: What living in the State of Indiana means to the student-what are the things
that make the student glad that he or she is a Hoosier?

All essays must be received or postmarked October 28, 2011.

Winners will be honored at the Statehood Day Celebration taking place on Friday, December 9, 2011 from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. EST, at the Indiana Statehouse. The first place winner will be invited to read his or her essay at the ceremony.

"Students learn about state history in the fourth grade and this is a great interactive way for them to apply what they have learned in the classroom," said Rep. Behning.

Please send essays to:
