Rep. Behning appointed to serve as chairman of study committees

STATEHOUSE — State Representative Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) has been appointed as the Co-chairman of the Commission on Education, the Regional Campuses Study Committee and the Committee on Common Core Educational Standards. Rep. Behning has also been appointed to serve as a member of the Education Roundtable, Regulatory Flexibility Committee and the Health Finance Commission.

“Many important issues need to be addressed concerning education in Indiana, especially the recent ISTEP testing issues,” said Rep. Behning. “Hoosier students, teachers and parents deserve our unwavering attention on this matter and the education system as a whole. As the chairman and member of multiple education committees,  my focus will continue to be on studying topics that are crucial to moving our education system in the right direction.”

Every year after the legislative session is completed, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Most interim committees begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.

Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, representatives continue their legislative duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.

“Summer study committees give members of the legislature, including myself, the time needed to properly vet legislative topics important to Hoosiers. The extra time granted to us allows for extremely useful dialogue between individuals that will be directly impacted by any legislation we may propose for next session,” said Rep. Behning.
