HEA 1321 enables Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) to convert low-performing schools into innovation network schools. This will give them more flexibility and autonomy to produce a turnaround in student performance.
“This was one of the most important education bills to come before the House this session,” said Rep. Behning. “This will give our state’s largest school corporation the flexibility to turn itself around without state intervention and truly become a center for student success.”
IPS will partner with school management teams to establish innovation network schools in existing schools that are underperforming, vacant, underutilized or underenrolled as determined by the IPS school board. Superintendent of IPS, Lewis Ferebee attended today’s bill signing ceremony and has worked closely with Rep. Behning on HEA 1321.
“It was such a privilege to work with Superintendent Ferebee on this initiative,” said Rep. Behning. “Because of his courage and creativity, we were able to move a bill forward that will go a long way to help students in failing schools. I appreciate his willingness to think outside the box and fight for the education of IPS students.”
