Gov. Pence signs the Indiana Works Council into law
STATEHOUSE —Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) is pleased to see Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 465 signed into law today by Gov. Mike Pence. SEA 465 creates the Indiana Works Council, designed to increase coordination between the state’s educational, job skills and career training systems.
“It is important we continue to make strides towards closing the skills gap in Indiana,” said Rep. Behning. “SEA 465 will create more dialogue between the Legislature and representatives from the public and private sector on how to best create high quality job growth for Hoosier students.”
The Indiana Works Council will provide recommendations to the Legislature on how to create innovative improvements to Indiana’s job skills training. The governor will designate distinct geographic regions throughout the state and establish a Works Council for each region.
Each council is required to submit a comprehensive evaluation of the career, technical and vocational opportunities available to high school students in the region before the end of the year. From the evaluations, an alternative curriculum can be implemented for students to more closely align their studies and training with educational pathways to high-wage, high-demand jobs.
“Showing students how their education will directly transfer to great career opportunities is imperative. Legislation like SEA 465 will continue to keep Indiana’s economic climate prosperous by pairing individuals with the high-quality job opportunities they desire.” said Rep. Behning.
In 2011, 1.4 percent of Indiana high school graduates earned a Core40 with a Technical Honors degree, yet Indiana has the 3rd highest percentage of high school graduates directly entering the workplace. SEA 465 will increase the coordination and cohesion of regional and state efforts to address the skills gap, ensuring students graduating from high school are prepared for the next step – whether postsecondary education or entering the workforce.
Rep. Behning was the lead House sponsor of SEA 465. Other House sponsors included Reps. Rhonda Roads (R-Corydon), Vernon Smith (D-Gary) and Greg Porter (D-Indianapolis).
