Family friendly school program passes through the House
STATEHOUSE —Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) is pleased to see Senate Bill (SB) 422 pass through the House today unanimously with a vote of 96-00. SB 422 establishes the Indiana family friendly school designation program.
“Parental involvement and family engagement is imperative to a child’s success,” said Rep. Behning. “I am proud to sponsor a bill that can increase parental involvement and higher student achievement.”
SB 422 will allow schools to voluntarily request an assessment from the Department of Education in order to designate a school as a family friendly school. The evaluation will incorporate surveys from students, teachers, and parents.
In order to be designated as a family friendly school, a school must establish parental and family engagement practices that increase parental involvement and higher student achievement. The results of the school’s evaluation by the Department of Education will be available for the public to access.
SB 422 was authored by Sen. Earline Rogers (D-Gary), Sen. Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn) and Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) and was cosponsored by Rep. Vernon Smith (D-Gary). The bill received bipartisan support in both the Senate and House.
“It is important we continue to create a learning environment conducive for Hoosier children and encourage key aspects of their growth such as the parent’s role in their education,” said Rep. Behning.
