The General Assembly may not be in session year round, but that doesn't mean that your legislators aren't hard at work. During the interim, representatives and senators from around the state meet to discuss a wide range of topics in summer study committees. The committees focus on specific topics and work to develop solutions for issues affecting Hoosiers. This is often where legislation for the upcoming session is developed.
Summer study committees are open to the public and meet at different times throughout the interim. Each committee hears testimony from the public so that committee members can better grasp topics based on affected Hoosiers opinions. I encourage everyone to get involved. If you are interested in speaking, call ahead and notify the committee chairman so a timeslot for your testimony can be included in the schedule. It is also possible to just come and listen to a committee hearing that sparks your interest or to learn a little more about the process. A schedule can be found online at http://www.in.gov/legislative/interim/ or you may call my legislative assistant Caitlyn Gamble at 1-800-382-9841 or 317-232-9753.
I am involved in the Indiana State Fair Advisory Committee and the Indiana Child Custody and Support Advisory Committee, which are both scheduled to meet this month. The Indiana State Fair Advisory Board will be meeting on September 20th at 9a.m. at the state fair grounds in the Administration Building Board Room, located at 1202 E. 38th Street in Indianapolis. The Indiana Child Custody and Support Advisory Committee is meeting on September 21 at the Statehouse in room 233 at 1:30 p.m. The schedules for both meetings have yet to be determined so if you would like to address either committee, there is still time to get on the schedule.
The committees I am involved in are just a small portion. There are more than 40 committees all together, and I am sure that one of them will be of some interest to you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 1-800-382-9841, e-mail me at email@example.com, or write me at 200 W. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN 46204.
