Rep. Pond congratulates local farm on accomplishment

STATEHOUSE- State Rep. Phyllis Pond (R-New Haven) applauds the L.D.T. Yoder family farm for the honor given to them  by Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Agriculture Director Joe Kelsay Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Hoosier Homestead Award Ceremony at the Indiana State Fair.
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Forty-six Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership and 29 Sesquicentennial awards recognized 150 years.

“Family farms are essentially the original small business operation,”said Rep. Pond.  “Small businesses, like the L.D. T. Yoder family farm, are the backbone of the Hoosier economy.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. Over 5,000 farms have received the award in the past 30 years.

“I commend those family farms honored today,”said Rep. Pond. “This is certainly an achievement to be proud of, highlighting the hard work and dedication necessary to operate a successful farm.”

Two award ceremonies are held each year – one at the Statehouse in February and one at the State Fair in August.
