Make this Hot Summer a Safe Summer

With Independence Day behind us, families recently celebrated our nation’s birthday in a variety of ways.   Some families may have partaken in the local parade, attended the annual cookout, and took the opportunity to cool off at a community pool.  Whatever your plans maybe for the rest of the summer, one thing is for certain, you will need to incorporate a plan to stay cool in the extreme heat our state is facing.

Hoosiers must be prepared to face the dangerous levels of heat and humidity that Indiana is experiencing.  The Indiana Department of Labor (DOL) recently released some tips for hot weather safety that I wanted to bring to our community’s attention. Staying out in the sun for long extended periods of time can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.
 
Heat stroke occurs when one’s body temperature rises so rapidly that the body’s natural method of cooling, which is sweating, does not happen and the body becomes overheated. Someone having a heat stroke may experience a host of symptoms.  Nausea, Dizziness, red dry skin without perspiration, headache, confusion, an uptick in pulse, and unconsciousness all can occur in the event of a heat stroke.  According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), if you are experiencing these symptoms seek medical attention immediately.  A heat stroke, if left untreated, can even lead to death.

Hoosiers who plan to be out in the presence of the sun for an extended amount of time can take several easy steps to help ensure a safe summer.
 
Water is key. The DOL also states water should be consumed at a rate of five to seven ounces every fifteen to twenty minutes.  The heat and humidity will drain your body of its fluids faster than normal and they need to be replenished.  Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty. Being thirsty should not be the indicator of drinking more water.

Sunscreen is also a helpful tool when combating the sun, heat, and humidity.
 
Rest, is another weapon to fight against the heat and humidity.  Especially if you work outside, it is important that breaks are taken often.  Finally, when dealing with the heat and humidity know your limits and do not overdo it, because heat related illnesses are 100 percent preventable.
 
Finally,  I hope you all had a safe and happy  Independence Day and that you were able to spend time celebrating with family as you reflected on our Nation’s birthday.
