Rep. Lehman Recognizes Dots in Blue Water

STATEHOUSE — During session today, the House recognized a resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne) to honor students from his alma matter, South Adams High School, for their involvement with the charity organization Dots in Blue Water.

The organization was established by South Adams’ students with the mission of helping underdeveloped regions purify water for drinking purposes. An idea originating in one of the school’s science classes quickly became an interdisciplinary venture with students working on projects ranging from marketing and fundraising to actually building and testing water purification systems.

“These students have made a huge improvement in the livelihood of numerous Haitians,” said Rep. Lehman. “Their willingness to make a difference and to make the world a better place should be emulated by all.”

Guided by the efforts of South Adams’ students, Dots in Blue Water has raised close to $43,000 to date.

In the summer of 2011, eight students and eight teachers traveled to Haiti to deliver five water purification systems to locals throughout the country.  The devices were capable of purifying 55 gallons of water per minute using only a twelve volt battery. While in Haiti, a cholera outbreak in a remote mountain village inflicted hundreds, even killing five people. The group decided to travel to the village to deliver one of the purifications systems. After implementing the system, no new cases of cholera were contracted in the village.

Rep. Lehman congratulated the students for positively affecting the lives of so many by simply asking the question “How can we help?”  Speaker of the House Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis), who has travelled to Haiti the past two years with his church to volunteer, was moved by the students selflessness.

“The initiative and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by these students reflect the cornerstone of what makes America great,” said Rep. Lehman.
