STATEHOUSE – State Representative Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) authored a resolution today recognizing Ben Trockman, a young Evansville man paralyzed by a spinal cord injury.
At age 17, Ben Trockman suffered a C-3 spinal cord injury from a motocross accident. Now a National Adult Representative for the Easter Seals, Ben travels nationwide promoting their cause of helping disabled individuals gain independence. Trockman’s travels are not always easy.
Currently, airlines accommodate wheelchair-bound passengers by transferring them from their current wheelchair to another wheelchair provided by the airline. If proper precautions are not taken, those passengers could develop pressure sores.
“Individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury must alter their body position on regular intervals in order to prevent the onset of pressure sores,” said Rep. Crouch. “By doing this, it allows for continued blood circulation to pressured areas. The wheelchairs provided by the airlines do not necessarily serve the needs of the individuals who require their use and can be problematic.”
Rep. Crouch called on the Indiana congressional delegation to examine the issue of airline wheelchair accommodations. She pointed out that famous actor Christopher Reeve passed away due to complications from the treatment of a pressure sore he had developed.
“Christopher Reeve was more than just Superman, he was an inspiration for countless people,” said Rep. Crouch. “We can do more for people who are paralyzed to ensure they are properly cared for.”
Rep. Crouch’s resolution passed the House with a unanimous voice vote.
