(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 18, 2008 - In the past few years, more Hoosier National Guard troops have been deployed overseas than since World War II, greatly increasing the number of veterans looking for work. State Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) wants to assist our returning military personnel in their employment search by providing employers with incentives to hire veterans.

"The men and women of the armed services and their families have made tremendous sacrifices for our country," said Rep. Crouch. "I want to honor their sacrifices by providing them with as much assistance as possible."

House Bill 1321, authored by Rep. Crouch, would create a tax credit for qualified employers employing veterans discharged from military service after Sept. 11, 2001. The bill would allow employers to receive a credit of up to 10 percent of the wages paid to the veteran or $500, which ever is less. Employers who hire veterans of the National Guard or the armed forces of the United States would be eligible for the deduction. The bill limits total annual credits to $1 million.

The bill has been assigned to the House Veterans Affairs and Public Policy Committee, which Rep. Crouch sits on, and is awaiting a hearing.

Upon passage, the bill would take affect Jan. 1, 2009.

Rep. Crouch is committed to supporting and honoring Hoosier troops currently serving and our Hoosier veterans.  She will continue to assist the military service members and their families who are sacrificing to defend our freedom and democracy.
