STATEHOUSE - Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) and Sen. Vaneta Becker (R-Evansville) today encouraged the Vanderburgh and Warrick county councils to pass an ordinance allowing people to pay their property tax bills on a monthly basis.
"Many people cannot afford to pay their property taxes this year at once in full," Rep. Crouch said at a press conference at the Evansville Civic Center. "In this economy, many have lost their jobs and savings. Many seniors have seen their savings decimated by the faltering economy."
In 2008, Rep. Crouch and the Indiana General Assembly pass legislation authorizing county councils to pass ordinances allowing people to pay property tax bills by an automatic monthly checking account deduction or through a monthly installment plan. The ordinance could allow taxpayers to choose the date of the payment as well as the method.
"I encourage our local councils to adopt this policy and help Hoosiers stay out of debt," Rep. Crouch said. "By the time many Hoosiers receive their tax bills, they are unable to pay it by the due date. It's my intention this will make life easier for people in our community."
The legislation gives counties the option to decide how long the payment plans continue and how the payment plan will be set up if the property tax liability has not been determined. |
