STATEHOUSE-Two local school corporations were awarded grant money from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program. The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) received $450,000 and the Warrick County School Corporation (WCSC) received $175,000. The 21st CCLC grant money is to be used to create or expand community learning centers. IDOE specified that the grant money be awarded to public school districts, community-based organizations, public/private organizations, faith-based organizations, or a combination of these organizations. The WCSC will be using the grant for four elementary schools to give additional assistance to approximately 200 students. The after school program will include help with homework and literacy as well as math and science aid. The EVSC will be using the grant for eight locations elementary through high school and will give additional assistance to approximately 540 students. The money will be used on before and after school programs as well as summer school. Students will receive aid in reading, science and math. Adult education will be offered as well. "At a time when money is tight for our schools, it is a joy to see grant money coming to aid our children's education," Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville) said. "We have had to deal with some financial strain but this just goes to show that education has not been placed on the back burner. There are many positives to take away from this announcement, and I look forward to seeing the results." |
