(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 30, 2008 -The Indiana House of Representatives on Tuesday passed House Bill 1249, co-authored by Rep. Suzanne Crouch (R-Evansville), which will provide Purple Heart veterans a tuition and tax exemption for state schools.

"Since Sept. 11, the National Guard has deployed numerous soldiers, many who want to further their education, but do not have the means to fund it," said Rep. Crouch. "These men and women have preformed a great service for our country and state, and I want to provide them this opportunity to further their education."

Since Sept. 10, 2001, the Indiana National Guard has deployed 9,570 soldiers, and 63 have received a Purple Heart. Currently, only the children of Purple Heart recipients receive tuition exemptions. Since Sept, 2001 the average age of Hoosier veterans has become increasingly lower, outdating current policy. House Bill 1249 would provide Indiana Purple Heart veterans who entered active service duty after Sept. 10, 2001, with a tuition and fees exemption.
