Next Friday, November 11, is Veterans Day. It is a time to recognize the sacrifice our soldiers, both past and present, have made for us. Indiana owes a great debt to its veterans for their personal sacrifices and dedicated service. Currently, 75 Hoosiers (two still living) have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in testimony to their courage and sacrifices. Today, Indiana is home to nearly 550,000 veterans. There is no greater honor than to serve those who have given so much. There are many ways you can honor their service including attending a local Veterans Day program or just by saying thank you to a soldier you know. However, if you’re unable to attend a Veterans Day program, then consider participating in the Lt. Governor’s ‘Hoosier Cheer for Our Heroes’ to send your thoughts and prayers to U.S. troops that are spending the holidays away from their homes this year. There are two ways to send a card to our troops overseas. First, you can send a handwritten card or letter to the Lt. Gov.’s office. For instructions on where to send the notes and suggestions on what to include please visit www.in.gov/lg and click on the ‘Hoosier Cheer for Our Heroes’ link. The second option is to go online at www.engreet.com and follow the Hoosier Cheer link to send a personalized card that the company will mail to bases around the world every few weeks. Once your card is sent they will notify you via email where your card was sent. Lastly, the National Moment of Remembrance is an annual event that encourages all Americans to pause across the country at 3:00 p.m. local time to remember and honor our troops. If you’d like more information on veterans benefits in Indiana please visit www.in.gov/dva. Or, to see my ‘Benefits for Veterans’ informational guide, please visit my website at www.in.gov/H78 and at the top of the page under ‘Press Room’ click ‘Publications’. Many of us know someone who has or is currently serving our country in the armed forces. If you have the chance in the coming week, please take some time to remember and honor them.
