[r78] Crouch Capitol Connection: Summer study committee to discuss Affordable Care Act issues (8/7/2012)

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Start Date: 8/7/2012 Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 8/7/2012 End Time: 11:59 PM

Every summer my colleagues and I in the General Assembly are assigned to interim study committees so that we may delve deeper into issues that Hoosiers have asked us to address. I have been assigned to four study committees including the Council on Evansville State Hospitals, the State Council for Interstate Adult Offender Supervision, the Select Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight and the Health Finance Commission.

The Health Finance Commission’s first meeting will be held on Aug. 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the Statehouse. We have been charged with studying a variety of health issues, many of which have to do with the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as the Federal Healthcare Mandate. By this fall we will have heard from a multitude of experts on the issues, from across both the state and the nation.

At the first meeting we will be discussing three issues including:
• The effectiveness of current laws in Indiana and other states’ best practices when monitoring pain management facilities and prescribers of controlled substances.
• Whether any limitation should be placed on the dispensing of a prescription drug by pharmacies.
• Specified health insurance plans and the number of covered people with copayments, coinsurance amounts, and out-of-pocket costs incurred for prescription drugs that exceed specified amounts for the coverage.

I am looking forward to delving deeper into these issues and working to find solutions that best fit our community and the majority of Hoosiers.

If you’d like to watch this meeting, or other interim study committee meetings online, you may visit www.in.gov/legislative/ and on the left side of the page select ‘Study Committees’, choose the committee you are interested in watching, then on the listed agenda there will be information on how to watch the study committee meeting live online, including which room the meeting is being held in.

If you have any suggestions or questions for the Health Finance Commission meeting, please contact me by phone at 317-232-9769 or by email at H78@in.gov. The Select Joint Commission on Medicaid Oversight has scheduled their next meeting for Sept. 18, and I will be sure to report on those discussions at a later date.
