[R78] Crouch Capitol Connection: Honoring Girl Scouts for 100 years (2/10/2012)

Friday, February 10, 2012

Start Date: 2/10/2012
End Date: 2/10/2012

The Super Bowl was deemed a huge success last week. Indiana’s moment in both a national and international spotlight gave us the chance to extend a warm welcome and show the world what Hoosier hospitality is all about. It was also a great boon to our economy; the Super Bowl brought in approximately $150 million over the long weekend.

We made progress on multiple Senate bills this week in the House. Committees have started meeting to hear testimony on legislation and next week bills will begin to pass on second and then third reading in the House.

A very important milestone for The Girl Scouts of America was recognized this week in the House, as well. They are celebrating their 100th anniversary and, because of that, close to 60 Girl Scouts from across Indiana were honored with a resolution recognizing their accomplishments by the House of Representatives.

Since its inception in 1912, Girl Scouts have influenced the lives of more than 50 million American women who have participated in the organization in their youth. Girl Scouts across the country develop their leadership potential through activities that enable them to discover their values and skills, as well as the world around them. The organization also connects girls with others in a multicultural environment and encourages them to take action to make a difference in the world.

As first a Brownie and then a Girl Scout through my senior year in high school, I know firsthand that the organization helped me gain a sense of self-worth and realize that there is something special about being a woman and being able to make a difference. The Girl Scouts helped me gained leadership abilities that I have used throughout my life and I am grateful for the skills they helped me foster.

The Girl Scouts have declared 2012 the ‘Year of the Girl’ to celebrate girls, recognize their leadership potential, and commitment to creating a coalition of like-minded organizations and individuals in support of balanced leadership in the workplace and in communities across the country. This is excellent organization that I’m very proud to have been a part of. I hope that they can continue their success across the country and the world for the many generations of women to come.

I appreciate your continued to support and encourage you to contact me with questions or concerns about our community and state. I can be reached by phone at 1-800-382-9841 or by email at H78@in.gov.
