Rep. Wendy McNamara (R- Mt. Vernon) hosted sixteen students from the Indiana Legislative Youth Council (ILYAC) at the Statehouse on Wednesday. ILYAC is a body of Indiana youths from across the state that serve in an advisory capacity to the Indiana General Assembly and report on issues affecting young adults in Indiana.
“I have been working with these young people over the past few months, and it has been a goal of mine from the beginning to bring them to the Statehouse to see the legislative process firsthand,” said Rep. McNamara. “It’s wonderful to see them here observing legislative activities, which will help them better develop their opinions and recommendations for the General Assembly.”
This is the first time that ILYAC members have come to the Statehouse for a day. On their visit, youth council members were paired with a legislator and shadowed them throughout the day. The students were honored with a resolution on the House floor that introduced them to the House of Representatives and commended the work they do with the legislature. They were also given the opportunity to observe session, have lunch with legislators and take a tour of the Statehouse.
“ILYAC is a great program that gets students involved in civic work. This is an educational way for Indiana youth to feel more connected to their legislators and to develop their interest in the political process,” said Rep. McNamara. “I’m looking forward to hearing their views and insights in the future, and I hope it encourages them to perhaps seek political office one day!”
