Rep. McNamara congratulates local families on long-standing farms

STATEHOUSE- State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Mount Vernon) congratulates the Hasting family as well as the Rueger, Naab and McNamara families from Posey County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The awards were presented by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fair.

“Farming families like these are the reason why Indiana continues to be a national leader in the agriculture industry, and after devoting many years to this line of work, they are more than deserving of this recognition,” said Rep. McNamara.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farming families that have owned and operated the same farm for 100 years or more. Centennial awards were given for 100 years of ownership, while sesquicentennial and bicentennial awards were given for 150 and 200 years of ownership respectively.

The Hasting Farm, located in Mount Vernon, has been in operation since 1864 and received the Sesquicentennial award for over 150 years of ownership. Also from Mount Vernon, the Rueger, Naab and McNamara Farm received the Centennial award for operating over 100 years, which first began in 1887.

“Much of the food we rely on comes from our local farmers. As part of a family devoted to this industry, I know firsthand the incredible amount of work that goes into providing nutrition and sustenance to countless Hoosier families. I was honored to present them with the Hoosier Homestead Award today,” said Rep. McNamara “I am proud of the hard work and dedication these farming families have put into growing Indiana agriculture, and I was privileged to be a part of this ceremony.”

In 1976, the program was first established to acknowledge Indiana’s farming families that have made contributions to the economy, culture and the state’s overall advancement. Since the program’s inception, roughly 5,000 farms have been recognized for their dedication to Hoosier agriculture.

Each year, two award ceremonies are held; one at the Statehouse in February and the other held at the State Fair in August. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program or to nominate a family for the award, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.
