[R75] Bacon's Legislative Thoughts: Giving thanks and giving back (11/18/2011)

Friday, November 18, 2011

Start Date: 11/18/2011
End Date: 11/18/2011

Over the years, as our family has grown to include our daughters’ husbands and new grandchildren, we have built many traditions. Our Thanksgiving traditions are some of our favorites because we have time to relax and enjoy each other’s company, there is an abundance of good food, we watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and, since we are avid sports fans, watch football the rest of the afternoon.  The only time that I, and also my daughter De, spend time away that day are to answer the phones at our office so the rest of our employees can have the day off to spend time with family, as well.

We take time on Thanksgiving Day to count our many blessings. I think many people, during the holiday season, remember that there are those out there, some very close to home, which are not as lucky. Because of this, the House Republican members have started a food drive at the Statehouse. On Organization Day we will be bring canned goods for food banks across the state. I encourage you to take some time to give back to those in need if you are able to, as well.

Many food banks across the country are worried that their reserves are running low and that they will not have enough to feed the families in need during the holiday season. In the stories I’ve read, they have asked that people donate money instead of individual cans because the money we would spend on food at our local grocery store can be more impactful if spent by them. Food banks receive huge discounts when they purchase food and can buy two or three times as much as we can with the same amount of money.

We have much to be thankful for in our community that is safe and where many people are able to provide for their families. But in these hard times I know families that can use a little help. Please try to remember those in need during this time of year when the importance of friends and family is most clear.

After the holiday season, the legislative session will be in full swing, and I’ll be sure to keep you updated on our progress. I wish you a happy holiday season and as always, if you have any issues or concerns you’d like to address, please contact my Statehouse office at 317-232-9671 or at h75@in.gov.
