[R74] Rep. Ellspermann: House Republican Freshmen Support Speaker Bosma (1/20/2012)

Friday, January 20, 2012

Start Date: 1/20/2012
End Date: 1/20/2012

The Lunchpail Republican PAC has made outrageous accusations about our Speaker of the House Brian Bosma suggesting excessive pressure on House Republicans regarding the passage of House Bill 1001, Right to Work (RTW).  Let us clear the air right here, right now.  As elected officials in our own right, we exercise our own independent judgment when casting our votes for what will best serve our constituents and the state of Indiana.

Speaker Bosma said on Organization Day “that the members of the Indiana General Assembly can be brave or we can be safe.”  The freshmen wholeheartedly stand with the Speaker in that sentiment.  The courage to make difficult policy decisions under a strained political environment is not easy.  As newcomers, we have been encouraged by the Speaker and other House Leadership members to make our own policy decisions that fit our districts the best. We have had and will continue to have candid discussions focused on doing what is right for Indiana and our individual districts.

As freshmen, we have welcomed and engaged in respectful conversations with proponents and opponents alike.  Our cell phones, email inboxes and mail boxes have been filled with hearing the will of our constituents.  We have met collectively with thousands of Hoosiers in our town halls, Statehouse halls, and one-on-one meetings.  We have done our best to listen and to clarify, when necessary, what RTW is and might do for the future of Indiana.  It is how the democratic process works within our representative form of government.

There is no role for bullying in the legislative process. We are all Hoosiers trying to make our state and our specific districts the strongest they can be for Hoosier workers, families, businesses and communities.  This issue and all others this session will be decided by votes thoughtfully cast and in the best interests of the constituents represented.
