There are only a few organizations like IMVHOF across the US, and this year marks the first time Hoosier veterans will be inducted into the hall of fame. The induction ceremony will be taking place at their annual banquet, which will be held on or around Veteran’s Day this year. The inductees will be recognized and honored with a Hall of Fame Medallion of Honor, and nominations must be submitted by September 1, 2014. The criteria and guidelines to nominate someone are broad. In order to be eligible, a nominee must have either been born in Indiana, entered the military in Indiana or lived in Indiana for a minimum of eight years. Also, IMVHOF asks that nominees received an honorable discharge, be of good character and have no felony convictions. There are two categories that veterans can enter the Indiana Veterans Hall of Fame. The first category is based on their military accomplishments like receiving the Medal of Honor or Distinguished Service Cross, and the second category is for any service member who was honorably discharged that has made significant contributions to the community, state and/or nation. For the first category, additional items for completing a nomination packet include: a copy of a high-quality photo of the nominee, verification of the veteran’s status and copies of any medal certificates, citations and general orders for any awards they received. It is not required, but an essay describing why you feel that your nominee deserves this distinction and the sequence of their service achievements will be taken into consideration as well. The second category includes other requirements and optional items to submit. They ask that you provide a summary of your nominee’s employment history as well as a summary of their contributions. You can provide any supporting documents such as a list of awards or publications about your nominee, any civic activities or letters of recommendation. Indiana is lucky to call so many servicemen and women home, and I am very excited about the opportunity for some of these folks to be recognized and have the chance to share their stories. If you know someone who you believe deserves this special recognition, please visit http://www.imvhof.com/index.php for the nomination packet or feel free to contact my office at h74@iga.in.gov or 317-232-9833. The completed package can be mailed to: Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame Attn: 2014 C, P.O. Box 269098, Indianapolis, IN 46226. -30-
