[r73] Pharmacists to administer immunizations, House Bill 1464 passes out of House (2/12/2013)

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Start Date: 2/12/2013 All Day
STATEHOUSE- State Representative Steve Davisson (R- Salem) authored House Bill (HB) 1464, which gives pharmacists – and pharmacy students and interns under appropriate supervision –the ability to administer immunizations such as  pneumonia, tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap), and human papillomavirus (HPV). The bill passed through the House on Monday with a vote of 94-2. Reps. Rebecca Kubacki (R-Syracuse) and Dave Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) co-authored the bill.

“The positive impacts of this bill are outstanding for Hoosiers all across our state,” said Rep. Davisson. “Allowing pharmacists to immunize patients improves access to immunizations, lowers healthcare costs and improves the immunization rate. Having the accessibility to immunization is the foundation for a healthier Indiana. ”

Pharmacists, pharmacy students and interns will now be able to update the patient’s immunization data to the immunization data registry unless the patient of the patient’s guardian completes an immunization data exemption form.

The Indiana Board of Pharmacy will adopt rules stating that pharmacy students and interns must be supervised by a pharmacist, physician, physician assistant or advanced practice nurse. The pharmacy student or intern must also adhere to the same requirements as a pharmacist when administering an immunization.

Currently, an individual given an immunization by a pharmacist must be at least 14 years of age. This bill will lower the age to 12, if the individual’s parent or guardian is present and consents to the immunization.

“By allowing pharmacists, their interns and pharmacy students to update immunization data to the immunization data registry and CHIRP registry, accessibility between doctor and patient will be broadened.”

House Bill 1464 will now move to the Senate for further consideration. All bills can be tracked online at www.in.gov/legislative.
