Rep. Rhonda Rhoads (R-Corydon) is encouraging high school junior and senior female students to apply for the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) scholarship. Each year, the NFWL and the National Rifle Association (NRA) co-sponsor an academic scholarship for seven recipients. Winners receive a $3,000 award and are given the opportunity to attend this year's NFWL annual conference, which will be held on August 11-15 in Des Moines, Iowa. "I encourage any young female student to take advantage of this opportunity, to both aid in college financing and to learn about public policy, leadership and network with lawmakers from all 50 states," said Rep. Rhoads. "We are women leaders working for a good cause, to encourage our future women leaders." This year's essay topic is entitled "The Impact of the First Amendment on Women Leaders and Social Media." Applicants are asked to describe the rise of social media and what it means for the future of democracy and the interaction between citizens and both women candidates and elected women leaders. The application is available online at http://www.womenlegislators.org/. The deadline for the essay is Friday June 3, 2011. "The NFWL and the NRA are working together to sponsor this scholarship contest with the intent to enable young women to become committed to furthering their education by attending college and further advance women in leadership," said Rep.
