STATEHOUSE —Governor Mitch Daniels signed State Rep. Rhonda Rhoads’ (R-Corydon) legislation into law today allowing fire protection districts the opportunity to utilize the design-build contracting method for public projects. House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1016 is the third bill of this year’s legislative session to be signed into law. “I am very pleased that this legislation proceeded to the governor’s desk so quickly,” said Rep. Rhoads. “Allowing fire protection districts to use the design-build method will streamline the construction process and reduce the time and resources involved in negotiating multiple contracts.” In a design-build contracting method, both the design and construction project portions are agreed upon and integrated into one contract. Previous law allowed for the use of design-build contracting method for various governmental units, but did not extend to fire protection districts. “This legislation will reduce the costs associated with employing multiple contractors – ultimately saving taxpayers money.” HEA 1016 will go into effect on July 1, 2012. -30- |
