STATEHOUSE —State Rep. Rhonda Rhoads (R-Corydon) congratulated the fourth and fifth grade students of Georgetown Elementary School for their significant academic growth in the field of mathematics over the past year.

Georgetown Elementary School was honored today at the Indiana Statehouse for having one of the highest percentages of students in the state to achieve high growth in their mathematic skills.

“I could not be more pleased to hear about Georgetown Elementary School’s academic accomplishments,” said Rep. Rhoads. “This incredible improvement – especially in an area as difficult as math – shows that our local educators are doing a fantastic job and our local students are eager to learn and build their skills.

“As a former elementary school teacher, I know the hardships teachers and students incur on a daily basis – especially at the elementary school level. I applaud everyone at this school for their dedication and hard work in achieving this honor.”

The academic growth was determined by the Indiana Department of Education’s (IDOE) Indiana Growth Model measuring fourth to eighth grade students on how much they learn over the course of a year. Students are placed into groups with other peers who share the same ISTEP examination scores in the areas of mathematics and English/language arts.  Each student’s individual growth is measured by comparing their advancement on the ISTEP to the advancement of the other students in their peer group.

The Growth Model then labels a student’s growth percentile in a low, typical or high growth category. Georgetown Elementary School had 71.13 percent of students in the high growth percentile for mathematics.

“These students have set the bar high for their younger and older classmates, and I look forward to a tradition of success at Georgetown Elementary and in all of our local schools.”

S. Ellen Elementary School – also of New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation – was honored for their growth in mathematics as well.
