STATEHOUSE – Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) joined Governor Mike Pence yesterday for a ceremonial signing of House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1338, a measure that will raise the standards and accountability for charter schools in Indiana. Rep. Lucas co-authored the legislation.
“We are always aiming for higher education standards. This legislation ensures that charter schools are being held to same high standards as traditional public schools,” said Rep. Lucas. “As the General Assembly continues to expand opportunities, it is important that we make sure schools provide excellent educational services for students.”
HEA 1338 heightens the accountability and standards of Indiana charter schools, while also expanding transparency in the student’s performances. The legislation makes charter schools eligible to receive School Safety Grants. It also cleans up various aspects of charter school administration with the intention of making sure those schools operate and perform at the highest levels.
“As a member of the House Education Committee, I work to give Hoosier students and families the greatest number of educational choices,” said Rep. Lucas. “It is important though that as we continue to increase access to charter schools, we remain diligent in ensuring that those schools are serving children well. Boosting accountability for charter schools will make sure that a given school does not remain open if it is consistently rated a failing school. ”
Rep. Lucas (R-Seymour) represents portions of Bartholomew, Jackson, Jennings and Jefferson counties.
