The battle began just before Christmas in 1944. Pendleton’s platoon fell under a surprise attack by the Germans and tried to hold on for several days. His platoon found themselves gravely outnumbered. Pendleton escaped in a Jeep, but heavy enemy fire caused his vehicle to crash. “Jim Pendleton suffered a bullet wound to his right forearm,” said Rep. Frye when presenting the resolution to the House chamber today. “He recalled being able to see right through his arm.” A doctor informed Pendleton that amputation would be necessary. Jim rejected the notion and forced the doctor to promise never to do such thing. The doctor obliged, but informed him that it would take several surgeries and even more patience and rehabilitation. The Battle of the Bulge was a monumental victory in the European theatre that turned the tide in favor of the Allies, leading to ultimate victory of the war the following year. “Bold action and bravery were the difference between surprised defeat and astonishing victory in the Battle of the Bulge,” said Rep. Frye. “I was proud today to honor Jim Pendleton, a true Hoosier hero.” Jim Pendleton eventually recovered from his wounds and regained strength and movement in his arm. -30-
