(STATEHOUSE) Jan. 28, 2008 - With the half-way mark of the 2008 legislative session quickly approaching, the Indiana House of Representatives passed House Bill 1174, a measure authored by State Representative Cleo Duncan (R-Greensburg), which expands military leave for state employees from 15 to 30 days. "The need for this bill came to my attention from State Police Trooper Bob Garcia," said Rep. Duncan. "It is important we show our gratitude to state employees who make sacrifices to serve our country. This is one small way we can thank those in the armed forces and ensure they will not incur any penalties while performing their duties." Under current law, a member of the Indiana National Guard, Ready Reserve or any reserve component of the armed forces of the United States is allowed 15 days leave of absence without loss of time or pay. Rep. Duncan, along with several lawmakers, acted to give state employees an additional 15 days per year to fulfill their duties to the armed forces without being penalized by the state. During the second reading process Monday, one amendment passed, ensuring age requirements would not hinder any reservist from qualifying for leave. The bill now moves to third and final reading in the full House of Representatives. If it passes with a constitutional majority vote, the bill will head to the Senate for consideration. Rep.
