The holiday season is officially here, and it is one of my favorite times of the year. It is incredible watching friends, families and communities all coming together to celebrate traditions or begin new ones. This time of year, I tend to reminisce on all the things I am thankful for; one in particular is living in a community that comes together every holiday season. While many of us were still recovering from our Thanksgiving meals, I appreciate all of the support from those who participated in Small Business Saturday. This day was set aside by the Small Business Administration to celebrate and support local small businesses and all they do for their communities. When you think of the businesses that drive the Hoosier economy, what comes to mind? Is it Honda in Greensburg, Cummins or maybe even the IU Health Network? Although these industries are vitally important to our economy, you might be surprised to know that according to a 2013 report, published by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Office of Advocacy, small businesses represent over 97 percent of all employers in Indiana. This statistic is one of many that show just how significant small businesses are to the Hoosier economy. In fact, they are often referred to as the, “backbone of the economy.” In order for Indiana to succeed, it is imperative that we nurture and create the best environment for small businesses, which will ensure that our economy continues to flourish. This is something that is particularly important to consider during the holidays, so today, I would like to highlight our area main streets, which are home to many of our local small businesses. Indiana Main Street (IMS) was established to provide economic revitalization and professional assistance to participating communities as well as encourage the restoration of their downtown areas. A vibrant and visually appealing downtown area is one of the best tools that Indiana cities and towns have to bring people from the community together and also attract outside tourists. In our area, Aurora, Rising Sun and Vevay all participate in IMS and provide excellent resources to connect residents with information on what our district has to offer. Around this time of year, downtown areas across the country come alive with the spirit of Christmas and our communities are no exception. For the past 10 years, the city of Aurora has hosted their Annual Miracle on Main Street. This year, the event began on Nov. 30 and will continue each weekend through Sunday, Dec. 21. If you have never been, there are activities for all ages including: musical performances, live reindeer and horses, a pet parade, breakfast with Santa, a Dickens Village display as well as free photos and visits with Santa. This offers an opportunity for children to have some holiday fun and for parents to visit local businesses. This year, Switzerland County Tourism and Vevay Main Street are also coordinating their holiday activities. In the first annual “Light Up Main Street” contest, businesses and organizations will be challenged with decorating their windows and storefronts, with prizes being awarded to the top three winning businesses. This encourages small, local businesses to take an active role in the community. Another part of this year’s festivities was a Kid’s Christmas Party, at which I was asked to participate as a guest reader. As another legislative session approaches, I remain dedicated to economic development and look forward to a continued line of communication with small businesses. Whether you prefer antiques or Swiss chocolates, our local businesses truly provide something for everyone. Rather than doing all of your Christmas shopping at big retailers, this year, I urge you to think locally and buy at least one item on your Christmas list from a small business in our area.
