STATEHOUSE – This past legislative session, State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) authored legislation to incentivize the use of natural gas as a motor fuel; the positive, economic impact of this new law is already being felt. Yesterday, Kinetrex Energy, a subsidiary of Indianapolis- based Citizens Energy Group, announced a collaboration with the United Parcel Service (UPS) to supply fuel for up to 1,000 new UPS trucks running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). “When I authored this legislation, my primary goal was to encourage businesses to switch from diesel to natural gas,” said Rep. Frye. “When we increase the demand for natural gas, we in-turn increase the number of fueling stations and give more Hoosiers access to this inexpensive alternative fuel. Natural gas is also a domestic product, so we are keeping more money right here in the United States and decreasing our dependence on foreign oil.” In March, Kinetrex will begin providing fuel to five LNG stations across the Midwest. These stations will be located at UPS distribution hubs and will allow trucks to fill up for about 40 percent less than it would cost them to fill-up with diesel fuel. The use of natural gas can also decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent. “I want to thank Governor Pence for his continued support of an “all of the above” energy policy. It is a testament to our state’s business-friendly policies and strong workforce that UPS chose a Hoosier company for this project,” said Rep. Frye. “None of this would have been possible without a collaborative, statewide effort from the major stakeholders last session. I am excited for our state’s future as we look for economically-viable fuel sources.” Under this new contract, Citizens Energy Group will provide UPS with about 2 million gallons of LNG per month. -30- |
