This past session, I supported several pieces of education-related legislation that benefit Hoosier students, and on July 1, those new laws went into effect. It is important that we are all aware of these changes, so I have highlighted a few below.
House Enrolled Act 1134– School bus transportation
This law makes it illegal for parents or students to be charged a fee for bus transportation to and from school.
Senate Enrolled Act 267 – Education Concerning Child Abuse
The Department of Education (DOE) is now required to identify or develop model education materials, response policies and reporting procedures on child abuse, including child sexual abuse, for use by schools for grade two through grade five.
Senate Enrolled Act 268 – Advisory Committee on Early Education
The Education Roundtable is now required to establish an Advisory Committee on Early Education, with members from around the state, to continue conversation about early education and to provide professional and technical assistance to the Roundtable.
