STATEHOUSE - Rep. Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) honored Reagan Hochmeister on Tuesday, February 23, before the Indiana House of Representatives for her heroic act last spring in which she saved a boy from drowning.
The event occurred while Reagan was playing with her friends in a Knoxville, Tennessee hotel swimming pool during a break in the Destination ImagiNation global finals weekend. Destination ImagiNation is an after-school activity in which students work in teams to solve mind-bending Challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments.
Upon noticing a boy at the bottom of the swimming pool whose lips were blue, Reagan dove down to grab him and brought him up to the surface for help.
"This is an opportunity for the members of the Indiana House to say thank you," said Rep. Messmer. "This was an example of real-life heroism. Reagan put her own safety at risk for someone else and displayed tremendous courage in a crisis situation. "
Reagan's father and mother, Nick and Jenna, were on hand to celebrate with her, in addition to an aunt and two cousins from Indianapolis.
She has also been honored with a Badge of Courage and an Extraordinary Personal Action Award from the American Red Cross.
