[r63] Loogootee High School recognized for being true “Hoosiers”

As Hoosiers, basketball is in our blood. We watch games with passion, sometimes bated breath, always cheering our favorite team to victory. For the Loogootee High School boys’ basketball team, it was like the movie Hoosiers as they realized the ultimate victory in winning the school’s first state championship earlier last year.

To recognize their extraordinary efforts, I introduced House Resolution No. 3 congratulating the Loogootee High School Boys’ basketball team for becoming the 2012 Class 1A Boys’ Basketball State Champions. Much like the team from Milan High School in Hoosiers, the Loogootee Lions’ story is one of perseverance and diligence.

The Loogootee Lions became the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Class 1A Boys’ Basketball State Champions on March 24, 2012, at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis by defeating Rockville High School, 55-52.  Typically, I would present a House resolution closer to the event, but the championship game occurred after the 2012 legislative session had ended. However, I wanted to ensure that these boys received the recognition they deserved for their great accomplishment and for making their hometown proud!

Becoming state champions is truly an accomplishment for Loogootee High School. With a high school enrollment of 284 students, the Lions enjoyed their best postseason run in school history. Finishing with a 22-4 record after claiming the school’s 29th Sectional title, 10th Regional title, 4th Semi-State title, the Lions ultimately claimed their very first state championship title.

The 2012-2013 boys’ basketball team was able to make the trip to the Statehouse along with their head coach, Mike Wagner. Ironically, Coach Wagner was a sophomore on the 1975 single-class Loogootee boys’ state runner-up team. The Lions have been state runner-up twice, in 1975 when the one-class state tournament existed, and in 2005 in Class A.

It is both gratifying and an honor being able to recognize these boys for their great accomplishment. I am extremely proud of this team, and I am pleased that the General Assembly passed House Resolution No.3 with a standing ovation. May the great tradition of basketball continue with the Loogootee High School boys’ basketball team and with Hoosiers everywhere.
