Rep. Smith works to make roads safer

STATEHOUSE - State Representative Milo Smith (R-Columbus) testified on Tuesday before the Joint Study Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Solutions on the use of motorized bicycles and motor scooters.

"This bill is about public safety and making Indiana's roadways safer," said Rep. Smith. "We must address the issues of motorized vehicles, as many other states have already done. To continually improve public safety on our streets and highways, we must make changes to keep up with the new motorized bicycle and scooter technologies."

During the committee meeting, Rep. Smith gave a presentation on why we should be concerned about motorized scooters. He cited the example that during the last six months of 2010, Evansville was averaging almost 1 property damage accident per week involving a moped. He also referenced a recent Court of Appeals case, Lock v. Indiana, which highlights the lack of a definition in the law regarding motorized scooters.

"Legislation must be passed that will resolve many of the issues that have arisen due to changes in the capabilities and popularity of mopeds," said Rep. Smith. "Moped drivers must be held to the same accountability and safety standards as other Hoosier motorists. Addressing this issue will improve safety for all drivers."
