STATEHOUSE - State Rep. Milo Smith (R- Columbus) commends Yijiang Zhao, a 7th grader at Central Middle School in Columbus for taking first place in the 3rd annual Our Food, Our Farmers essay contest for grades 7-9. On Monday, Yijiang and other student winners were recognized at the Statehouse by Governor Pence and Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann at the Ag Appreciation month luncheon. “I want to send my most sincere congratulations to Yijiang Zhao and all of those who participated in this essay contest,” said Rep. Smith. “It is so refreshing to see students understand the importance of Hoosier farming and the weighty impact they have on the everyday lives of families across our state and nation.” In celebration of Indiana’s Agriculture Appreciation Month in March, six Hoosier children were selected for their winning essays. More than 500 students from all across Indiana submitted essays describing how Indiana farmers nourish families, animals and while protecting the earth. Winning essays were selected from three grade levels: 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. The first places winners received an Apple iPad and second place winners received Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. The contest was sponsored by Indiana’s Family of Famers and Indiana Humanities. The winning essays will be posted on www.indianafamilyoffarmers.com and www.indianahumanities.org. |
