STATEHOUSE- Indiana's Four Star School Awardees were announced for the 2008-2009 school year on Wednesday, said Reps. Woody Burton (R-Greenwood) and David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis). Six of the 188 schools that were honored with the prestigious award were within their districts. Among those schools were Central Grove Elementary School, Central Grove Middle School North, Maple Grove Elementary School, Pleasant Grove Elementary School, Sugar Grove Elementary School and Westwood Elementary School. The Four Star School Award is the state's highest educational distinction. "These awards are given to schools that go above and beyond what they are asked to do," said Rep. Burton. "It's great to see our local educators being recognized for doing an outstanding job in providing quality education to our young Hoosier students. This award is a combination of the teachers and students taking education to the next level." "These schools are in the top 25% of all Indiana Public Schools in multiple categories: math proficiency, language proficiency and attendance rates," added Rep. Frizzell. "It is really outstanding to see so many Greenwood schools being honored in this way, and it's testament to the dedication of educators, school administrators and families in our community." -30- Four Star Schools represent the top 25 percent of schools in Indiana. To earn the award, a school must be fully accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education, meet all Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), and perform in the top 25 percent of all schools in each of the following areas: . I-STEP+ Percent Passing both English/LA and Math . I-STEP+ Language Proficiency T-Score . I-STEP+ Math Proficiency T-Score .
