STATEHOUSE—Legislation authored by Rep. Woody Burton (R-Whiteland) providing a 13th check to retired public employees passed out of the Senate unanimously today. House Bill (HB) 1123 would provide a one-time 13th check to members of the Indiana State Teachers’ Retirement Fund, Public Employees’ Retirement Fund, State Police Fund and State Excise Police, Gaming Agent, Gaming Control Officer and Conservation Officers’ Retirement Fund. Eligibility for this additional allowance would depend on retirement and disability status. The additional compensation will be funded from excess investment earnings from the aforementioned retirement accounts. “It’s important for us to continue to take care of those individuals who devoted their lives to public service,” said Rep. Burton. “This legislation is a bipartisan effort to help retired public employees – including teachers and police officers – deal with unforeseen financial stress. This one-time additional assistance is especially important given our nation’s recent economic troubles.” While in the Senate, HB 1123 was amended to require the Office of Management and Budget to submit an annual report concerning post-employment benefits and liabilities for state agencies and educational institutions. Because HB 1123 was amended during Senate discussions, the bill returns to the original house for approval. If approved, it will be sent to the governor’s office for his signature to be signed into law. If the changes are not accepted, it will be discussed in conference committees consisting of representatives from both caucuses in each chamber. -30- |
