STATEHOUSE—Rep. Woody Burton’s (R-Whiteland) legislation adding a long-awaited fourth Johnson County Superior Court judge was signed into law by Governor Mitch Daniels Thursday. After petitioning the Commission on Courts during the previous interim, the commission determined Johnson County to be the top area in need of an additional Superior Court judge based on the current caseload. House Enrolled Act 1092 was drafted to allow a fourth judge in Johnson County’s Superior Court. The fourth judge would not begin until the rehabilitation of a fourth Johnson County Superior Court building is complete, expected by January 1, 2015. “Johnson County has been in need of an additional Superior Court judge for many years now,” said Rep. Burton. “I am glad the decision to add a fourth judge was a priority this legislative session, as well as establishing a fourth court. “Having a fourth court and judge will help alleviate some of the workload for the other judges, which will make Johnson County’s Superior Court run more properly and efficiently.” HEA 1092 will go into effect on July 1, 2012. -30- |
