[r58] Rep. Burton Reacts to Budget Bill (2/20/2009)

Start Date: 2/20/2009 All Day
End Date: 2/20/2009

(STATEHOUSE) Feb. 20, 2009 - Rep. Woody Burton (R-Greenwood) offered the following statement about House Bill 1001, the budget bill:

"I listened with great intensity to the debate on the budget bill, and I have real concerns.

"My No. 1 concern is that we now have a one-year budget instead of a two-year budget. My concern is that we are heading toward a full-time legislature, and it is in my experiences that the more we are in session, the more taxpayer money we are spending.

"We are in extremely difficult economic times, and I am also concerned the budget bill did not mention enough about cutting spending. At home, if times are tough, I cut back my expenses, so why are we talking about taking money away from areas, such as education and our emergency funds?

"I will take this bill into more consideration when it comes back from the Senate, with the hope that it has significantly changed."
