STATEHOUSE- State Rep. Woody Burton (R-Greenwood) is encouraging local students to apply for the Statehouse Page Program. The Indiana House of Representatives offers the chance for students between the ages of 13 and 18 to come into the Statehouse to both interact and get a firsthand experience of what a full day is like involving legislative activity. "I think our Page Program is a fantastic experience for young students to come into the Statehouse and learn the ins and outs of how our legislature works," said Rep. Burton. "It provides the opportunity for students to get a tour of the Statehouse, see where the governor works and observe both committee meetings along with floor sessions of the House, Senate and Supreme Court chambers. It is very neat in a sense that it allows young people the chance to see how things operate and get done for our state." Pages will have a variety of opportunities to tour the Statehouse building, including a walk through the governor's office and the Indiana House, Senate and Supreme Court chambers. Pages will also be given the chance to witness committee meetings and floor sessions that take place throughout the day. Pages will get to assist Rep. Burton with his daily activities and duties during their visit as well. Pages that choose to take advantage of this opportunity will have an excused day of absence from their school. Pages will be responsible for finding their means of transportation both to and from the Statehouse. Availability fills up fast so interested students are encouraged to make an appointment as quickly as possible. Those interested in serving as a page for the House of Representatives should send their name, age, address, phone number and school to state Rep. Woody Burton, 200 W. Washington St., Statehouse Room 401-8, Indianapolis, IN 46204, or e-mail requests to H58@in.gov. -30- |
